EF Xiaoshan is situated in Zhejiang Province in Eastern China about half an hour away from the provincial capital Hangzhou and an hour and a half away from Shanghai. EF Xiaoshan has been operating for over ten years. The school teaches a wide range of learners from early learners to adults in groups of up to fifteen.
EF schools adopt a modern eclectic approach to language learning. This means that teachers plan their classes with their learners’ needs in mind taking decisions on the approach, methodology and materials which most suits their learning needs at any given time. Having said that, classes mainly adopt a communicative approach incorporating the Direct Method (we only use English in classes) and aspects of “The Lexical Approach” and “Task Based Learning” to develop all four skills including literacy and phonological awareness.
We have a huge amount of resources available for teachers – Interactive White Boards with internet access in each classroom; audio, video, power point, interactive activities and printable hand outs for each course available online; hardcopy and pdf format books covering a wide range of topics within Applied Linguistics; photocopiable resource books as well as realia including toys, board games, costumes and more.
Our aim as teachers is to provide learners with the conditions for language learning to take place – exposure to language in an understandable context; opportunity to use language; motivation through engagement and feedback or a focus on form. In doing so we have classes where learners interact with each other as much as possible and produce as much language as possible whilst also focusing on aspects of meaning, form and pronunciation in vocabulary and grammar to complete tasks with a real-world focus.
We expect teachers to be keen learners themselves and to seek, each week, to develop their language awareness, functional knowledge and technical skills in the classroom in order to reflect on and improve their learners’ results. We also expect teachers to recognise that learners whose parents are included in their learning achieve higher results. We therefore place the relationship with parents high on the list of priorities. Teachers do not manage this relationship on their own – they have bi-lingual local members of staff working to help them whose main role is to enhance the relationship between parent and teacher.

Teachers in EF Education First Xiaoshan have a high focus on classroom practice, planning classes, continual professional development and service provision. They are a passionate group who understand that working as a teacher is a collaborative vocation.
We currently have sixteen teachers on staff who hail from the USA, the UK, Australia, South Africa, Canada and of course China. Teachers range in experience from those who have just qualified to teachers with over nine years’ experience.
EF Xiaoshan’s Management
The management of the school understands how important teachers and their welfare is to its success. Our considerable experience means that we are well versed in managing the recruitment and employment of our teachers to a high level of satisfaction. We do things by the book – pay teachers on time, ensure that teachers’ apartments are comfortable and maintained. We also provide a high standard of quality in the management and coaching of our teachers as professionals. We expect teachers to help themselves, but we also want to have a very strong hand in guiding, training and developing teachers from initial qualification on to Senior Teacher and Director of Studies positions with better qualifications.
We run weekly workshops, conduct weekly observations (peer, Senior Teacher and Director of Studies), have a regular Senior Teacher meeting to go through lesson plans and provide further training support via EF’s Online resources. As a new teacher, you will complete our induction to become familiar with people, resources, processes and expectations. You will be assisted in the completion of induction with a mentor and with hands on work from your Senior Teacher and Director of Studies.
Evaluations for teachers are conducted after 3, 6 and 9 months. This entails a self-evaluation and evaluation by the Director of Studies according to clearly defined benchmarks which are communicated to you during induction. Evaluation is a time to review the work you’ve done and set action plans for the 3 months ahead. In addition, teachers are given the opportunity to feedback on their department and their level of engagement and satisfaction. We take this feedback very seriously and look to act on issues raised immediately to ensure that we communicate the value of our teachers directly to them. This level of dialogue and interest in our teachers’ development sets us apart as an organisation from other English language schools and provides not only a more rewarding work experience but also a much more impressive resume.
Our salary package is:
1. An initial 12 month contract.
2. A basic salary after tax of CNY 7,500 - 9,000 per month. This is take home pay.
3. A flight allowance of CNY 9,000 per year payable in instalments of CNY 4,500 after 6 and 12 months. (If the initial cost of your flight to China exceeds CNY 4,500 the school will pay 50% of the excess above CNY 4,500) – please in that case just provide me with receipts.
4. Accommodation provided by the school. Our standard offer is for shared accommodation.
5. Medical Insurance with the Zhejiang Education Authority required provider PICC.
6. Ten days’ discretionary holiday; Twelve days’ discretionary holiday. Twelve public holidays (taken according to direction from the government).
7. Reimbursement of the cost of your visa upon production of receipts. Remember to keep all your receipts relating to visa and background check and hand them to HR, as soon as you arrive.
8. Support and costs covered of securing the Cambridge University Teacher Knowledge Test (for EF’s dual certification requirement). This is a very basic pre-teaching qualification that all EF teachers get to demonstrate competence to the local market.
